Frequently Asked Questions
Get answers to common questions about our services
Will I avoid all UK tax if I cease UK residence?
No. If you purchase the UK Tax Exit Plan a more detailed answer to this question will be included but in broad terms you will remain liable to UK income tax on UK source income and will remain liable to UK capital gains tax on UK real estate. In addition, it will also be necessary to consider the temporary non-resident rules. These rules can tax certain forms of income and capital gains on your return to the UK.
Why do I have to upload my passport?
As a regulated individual, I am required to verify the identity of my clients and to conduct due diligence before I can provide tax advice. I use a digital service to do this to make the client onboarding process as smooth as possible. Please note, this is a regulatory requirement over which I have no discretion.
Is your advice HMRC-compliant?
All recommendations are based on current UK tax law, particularly the Statutory Residence Test (SRT). Where there is grey area, I will flag it clearly and explain your risk. Please note that the UK tax system is based on a system of self-assessment and HMRC will not give "clearance" in advance as to whether you are UK resident or not.
Can I book a consultation?
Yes, after receiving your tailored report, you will have the option to book a consultation to go through your tax report. The cost of this consultation is included in the cost of the report.
Are you regulated?
Adventure Advisory is the Chambers of Christopher Eames, a self-employed barrister specialising in UK tax advice and regulated by the Bar Standards Board.
Why can't I just use ChatGPT to give me the answers?
You can! However, ChatGPT cannot be sued if it gives you incorrect advice and is known to "hallucinate". In addition, certain legal advice provided by a lawyer is "privileged" which means it cannot be disclosed to HMRC.
Is this a tax avoidance scheme?
No. While people are often surprised by the number of days they can spend in the UK while remaining non-resident, ceasing UK tax residence is not merely a "paper exercise". It will require you to make certain alterations to your lifestyle including reducing the number of days you spend in the UK.
What is "public access"?
Public access allows accredited barristers to take on clients directly rather than through a solicitor or other professional. I have this accreditation which allows me to work directly with you. You can read more about public access here.
